You often hear the phrase “the money’s in the list” and your own email list, full of qualified prospects is an extremely valuable asset.

Many people are intimidated by the process of list-building but there are only two main components to building a list

  • A Reliable Autoresponder System

An Effective Squeeze Page

The first thing you’ll need is somewhere to capture visitors’ email addresses effectively and this will be on what’s commonly known as a squeeze page or landing page.

A squeeze page is simply a page that captures a reader’s interest, often offering something for free in exchange for their email address. It will also include a brief description of what they’re going to get and a call to action, telling them to fill in the email address to receive the information.

What is an Autoresponder?

The autoresponder system is a third-party program that sends out emails and responds to subscriber’s emails. It also deals with unsubscribes and can offer you inside into why people are unsubscribing, you can attach a comment box to it.

When you sign up to be on an email list you probably received an automated response via an autoresponder system. Usually the first email you receive will ask you to verify that you did indeed sign up to be on someone’s list. The second one should contain a welcome message.

All the emails that go out in sequence to your subscribers have to be compiled by you but you can do them in large batches so it doesn’t become a daily chore. You can set them up to be delivered on certain days of the week and at a prescribed time. If you’re going away on vacation you can set them up before hand and relax.

There are two kinds of autoresponder. You can use a third-party company such as or if your company has its own server you can employ your technical guys to set it up for you.

For beginners, the first choice is much easier as all security is handled by the autoresponder service. They also offer hundreds of different templates that you can use to send out emails, and they have excellent customer service if you should ever have any questions or problems.

Some autoresponder services will offer you free use until you reach a certain amount of subscribers and after that you pay a small monthly fee. This is definitely a good investment for your business, it may not appear so if you only have a few subscribers right now, but once you get hundreds you’ll never be able to handle it on your own.

It may take just one email to sell your product but normally it will take at least a dozen emails before you make a sale. With those emails being automatically served to your prospects you can just sit back and wait while getting on with other marketing tasks.

If you’re going to invest in tools for your business an autoresponder should be at the top of your list.
